External references, or xrefs, are files brought into AutoCAD drawings as attachments or overlays. The option to overlay or attach an xref is available under the Reference Type section of the Attach External Reference menu in AutoCAD.
Similarities
Attachments and overlays are referenced to host drawing files. The attachment or overlay imported into the host drawing comes from a source file. The attach command inserts external references and graphics into drawing files. Xref attachments require an attachment and a path type. Source file references can use a full path that includes all folders listed in the file path. Relative paths reference the source drawing based on the host file’s location. Xrefs do not require a path if the source drawing is kept in the same folder as the host drawing. Both attachments and overlays require an insertion point and scale.
Attachments
The Attach Image dialog box is used to insert images, such as architectural blocks and PDFs, into an AutoCAD drawing. Using the Attach tool on the Reference panel to attach images and files to a drawing does not create an external reference. If the image to be attached is not located in the same folder as the host drawing, the path for the attachment is entered into the dialog box. Updating an xref also updates the drawings in which the xref is attached. The latest saved version of the externally referenced attachment is used by AutoCAD. Such attachments as drawing blocks are not similarly updated when their source files are changed. Attachments are displayed along with the host drawing when copied or printed. Use the tree view in the External References Manager to review the sources of attachments and look for circular references. Circular external references can generate errors and prevent a drawing from plotting correctly.
Overlays
Circular external references cannot occur with overlays because overlays remain separate from the host drawing. If the xref is imported as an overlay, overlays within the imported xref are not imported with it. A multilayer drawing with references to other xrefs will not carry the nested or child references into the new, host drawing.
Managing Xrefs
The External References palette includes the commands to attach, detach and reload xrefs. The External References Palette will show the number of attachments and overlays used in an AutoCAD drawing and lets users switch xrefs from attachments to overlays and back. The Manage Xrefs icon is used to change xref links or detach an xref. Binding an attachment or overlay makes it permanently part of the host drawing, and it no longer updates as the source drawing is changed.

Lightroom :: Very Dark And Dull Prints?
May 27, 2013I have used LR 2 in the past with Windows 98 and an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 shooting with Pentax k10d using DNG files and printing with few or no problems with minimal developing. I am now trying LR 4 with the same printer and camera but with Windows 7 and with little or no changes in developing the prints are very dull and almost black. I have the latest driver updates and am have the printer letting the application manage the color with the correct setting in profile.

Photoshop Elements :: Scanned Black And White Print In Color And All Black Replaced With Dark Green
Nov 25, 2012I scanned a black and white print in color and am trying to replace all the black with dark green. Been trying for hours in elements 9. This is all so hard. Just to ask this question I have typed it into 3 different screens, set screenname, many other hurdles.
AutoCad :: XRef Colour - Drawing Shaded Dark
Sep 23, 2009I have inserted an xref but when it shows on my drawing the whole thing is shaded dark. When I look at the xref the colours are fine, until its on my drawing. I inserted it on its own layer.
Does it matter what colour I assign to that layer? I tried different colours but it changes nothing. What does that allocated colour determine?

Photoshop :: Lighting Effects Renders Black Or Very Dark
Jul 9, 2013I have been faced with an almost identical problem listed here URL....The only thing that changes it from complete blackness is the 'Ambience' value. I've done all software and hardware updates, reinstalled the graphics card driver, and restarted a multitude of times. I am using:
Dell Optiplex 390
Intel(R) HD Graphics 2000
Windows 7 64 bit
Photoshop CC
No Color Management
No plug-ins, or anything other than default PS settings
I used Lighting Effects on Photoshop CS3 and CS6 for almost two years on this machine with no problem. This was the first time I had tried to use it since I upgraded to CC. I uninstalled all other versions of PS when I upgraded, so I have not tried to replicate the problem in older versions.

Photoshop :: Image With Gradient Gets Black Spots All In Dark Areas
Mar 14, 2013I am having a huge issue with Photoshop CS5.5. The gradients and colors are acting crazy. When I bring in a image with a gradient it gets black spots all in the dark areas. Even when I use the default gradient selection this is what happens. When I bring in a picture that should have a white background it turns to black. Now apparently, when I save it out as a JPEG saves correctly without the black line or messed up gradients. So it seems to only be an issue when I am working in Photoshop, the gradients appear messed up. What is wrong with my display?
Photoshop :: How To Turn Black Or Dark Coloured Clothing / Items White
Aug 7, 2012I have been using Photoshop for a while now but have recently been invited to design some sportswear. I want to initially take existing clothing and change the colours and add designs. As an example, how would I get this soccer kit to be either all white or white on everything apart from the shorts?
I have managed to get yellow to go white using the hue/saturation tool but dark colours seem like its impossible. I do also want to know how to go from white to a darker colour but maybe I should save that for my next thread.

Photoshop :: Font On Dark Background?
Mar 9, 2003I have this stupid problem, I want to make a header for my new site... In this header I use a cool font and do some bevel and emboss on it. The background of the header is transparent because my site has a background with a motive. But when I save the header and place it into my page, there is a white border around the font, how can I solve this? I already tried with brushing some black around the font, this helps, but you can still see it has been done the wrong way.
AutoCAD Print / Plot :: Black Box Appearing On Xref Image When Plotting?
Jan 10, 2014When I try to plot the file from the layout the middle and right part of my xref'ed image comes out as a black box - the top, bottom and left edge are fine. As are the line-drawings from two other xref on top of the image. The problem accourse both when I try to a physical copy on our plotter and when I try to plot to a pdf.

Photoshop :: Dark Grey Background Instead Of Transparency
May 7, 2012Windows, PS CS4. I'm trying to erase part of an image such that there is nothing there. However, when I erase the part of the background layer (I have no layers below it, and none above occupying the same space), I do not see the chequered transparency pattern, but dark grey. This grey also remains part of the image as if it were a colour rather than being transparent. To be specific, it is the white between the borders of a comic I am trying to erase..
Photoshop :: Can't See Spot Brush On Dark Background
Mar 5, 2009I have just installed Photoshop CS4. When I try to use the spot healing box on a dark background, the target area is invisible as the target circle is black, as is the background. It's like trying to find a black cat in a coal mine.

but for some reason the resolution from this home made job comes out terrible at Vista Print so I have to do the card writing on their site and give them a better resolution image which the one in the first two links is.

Lightroom :: Softproof To ARGB Or SRGB - Resulting Proof Crushes Dark Tones Into Solid Black
Apr 2, 2014When I am going through RAW files from my Canon cameras (1Ds MkIII and 6D) I edit them in the develop module and then convert to aRGB or sRGB depending on the output media. They look good in aRGB and sRGB too when I take into account the limitations of sRGB.
---> However, if I try the softproof to aRGB or sRGB the resulting proof crushes dark tones into solid black. Why is this when the actual conversions are way better? The actual conversions look good in both LR and PS CS5.
I have also noticed that when I upload images to my online galleries and view them with Firefox (latest version and color management enabled for all rendered graphics) they appear darker in the darkest tones than what they appear in LR. What gives?

Photoshop :: Path AntiAliasing - Dark On Light Background But Not The Other Way
Sep 8, 2012Why bother providing an 'Antialias Guides and Paths' setting if it's going to look this bad when projected on a dark background? Yes, this is with that setting ENABLED:
It's not quite as unacceptably nasty when the path is dark on a light background, but it's still a good ways off perfection! If Photoshop should not be held accountable for being pixel-perfect, what application should be? This is not even close enough for government work!
Here's the PSD file with which you can generate the above if you'd like to reproduce the appearance shown...
[URL]
Edit: Just to show that it can be done well, consider these two images, which I did by stroking the path in linear space.

Photoshop :: Color Bug? Drawings Vanish When Using Dark Background
Jan 12, 2008Hi, I just started working with Photoshop, so I might be making some stupid rookie mistake...but I can't figure out what the hell could be wrong.
When I draw something on a dark background it just vanishes as soon as I fill the area with the paint bucket!
If I have a dark grey background, and draw something in black using the brush, when I try to fill the drawing, for instance green, with the paint bucket, the entire picture becomes green!
It was as if the drawing was never there.
At first I thought I had some wierd setting on my brush, but the wierd thing is that this only happens when I use dark.

Photoshop :: Background Transparent Displays As Dark Gray
Aug 31, 2006My default background/work area has been transparent--displayed as a light gray and white checkerboard--forever.
Today it changed to dark gray. It's still transparent, but it shows up on the screen as dark gray. I want it back the way it was. I've read all the solutions on the Adobe forums (using the magic wand, or the background eraser, etc.) and none of them work.
I can't help but think I inadvertently changed some setting,

Illustrator :: Dark Gray Background To And Image / Pattern?
Dec 19, 2012I'm using Illustrator cs6. I would like to change the dark gray background that surrounds the art board to a step and repeat patterns of our logo. We use screenshots as a means of generating low-res proofs. Having our step and repeat logo pattern as the background would allow us to easily include it in our low-res screenshot proofs. Can I replace the 'system file' for the dark gray to our step and repeat pattern?

Sep 22, 2009is it possible to change the background color [outside the artboard] to a dark grey? because i really dont like having a big white screen while working in illustrator.when you normally work in illustrator, the artboard is indicated by a black border line but when you select the artboard editor tool, the background changes to dark grey, so it is possible and that is the effect im looking for, but then permanently.is it possible to do this via the preferences somewhere, or via a hack?

Photoshop :: How To Cut Image From White Background And Place On Black Background
Aug 24, 2011I seem to be having problems when I lasso round a specific part of a photo taken with a white background and then try to add that part of the image to a plain #000000 black background.
I always seem to get a white outline around the image when I place it on the black background, even when its on ZERO feathered. I don't like using feathered as it adds a smudge round the outside of the image.
